SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Apr. 19, 2000) -- Sierra Trek, the largest all-volunteer four-wheel drive event in the country, is scheduled for August 17 through August 20 at Meadow Lake in the high Sierra, according to Bob Reed, Sierra Trek 2000
chairman.

Hosted by the California Association of Four-Wheel Drive Clubs, the 34th annual Sierra Trek event is expected to draw approximately 1,500 participants from throughout the western United States. More than 500 volunteers from the association help make this one of the most popular 4X4 events in the nation.

“Our registration opened March 1 and we encourage interested four-wheeler enthusiasts to register as early as possible,” said Reed. “In addition to having a great time four-wheeling in some beautiful areas in the backcountry, we offer a host of other activities for children and adults.”

Reed said this family event features several four-wheel drive trips, manufacturers’ exhibits, a 4X4 vehicle show, games for the children, a live band for dancing and “some of the best mouth-watering meals west of the Mississippi River.”

Base camp for Sierra Trek is at Meadow Lake, located approximately 30 miles north of Truckee. The Fordyce Creek Trail serves as center stage for the “hard-core,” short-wheel based four-wheelers, who run the trail Thursday through Saturday. In addition, Reed said there are other trips geared for “all” wheel-based vehicles and a scenic sport utility vehicle (SUV) trip that takes participants through old mining communities and up to the top of Lacey Peak – 8,000-feet in elevation.

“With more and more people buying into the SUV market, our scenic tour is really growing in popularity,” Reed said. “Last year we had about several SUV owners who had never put their vehicles into four-wheel drive and they were absolutely amazed at the hills they were climbing and how their vehicles performed at that slow speed.”

Cost for the scenic SUV trip on Saturday, Aug. 19 is $85 per adult and $20 per child 7 to 12 years old. Children under seven are free. The cost includes the trip, one dash plaque, Saturday trail breakfast, trail lunch, camp dinner and Sunday
breakfast. Deadline for registration is July 1.

There is ample room at Meadow Lake for recreational vehicles, trailers and tent camping.
